Introduction
In the early 1980s, I began to appreciate the healing value of seaweed. I was cooking macrobiotically then, and seaweed dishes were daily fare. Seaweed, I had learned, was rich with minerals and nutrients that our bodies often lack. Moreover, if you ate enough, it could pull toxins from the cells, soothe inflammation and boost the immune system. But most of my fellow macrobiotic dieters could eat but small amounts of seaweed. They found it palatable only when its flavor was masked with ginger, sesame, and a lot of tamari. My kids wouldn’t even touch the stuff. Only a rare few within my macrobiotic community loved seaweed as much as I did. We enjoyed eating it cooked or chewing it raw—straight from the package. Still, it was impossible to eat the amount required each day to take seaweed beyond dietary supplement into the realm of therapeutic agent. And cooking it surely destroyed some of its healing compounds.
Then, in the spring of 2002, a friend who works for my publisher called. He told me that seaweed, specifically the variety called Limu Moui, was now available in a liquid extract. He was aware of my previous work on liquid nutritional supplements and asked if I would research Limu with the possibility of writing a book about it. He had no clue about my previous experience with seaweed. Little did he know that I was immediately intrigued with the idea of a concentrated, liquid seaweed extract. Could we now obtain the benefits of seaweed without having to chew it or mask it with seasonings and salt? I had high hopes that the extract would not taste like seaweed. Then, even my children might enjoy it as a daily supplement.
My next step was to scan the internet for testimonials. I discovered that hundreds of people had already improved their lives and their health thanks to Limu. I couldn’t wait to try some for myself and found a local Limu distributor. He delivered a case to my doorstep the next day. Eagerly, I opened a bottle and poured some of the light-green-colored Limu into a glass. To my delight, it did not smell or taste at all like seaweed. It was not salty, bitter, sour or sweet, and the label on the bottle listed less than one gram of carbohydrate (or sugar) per one-ounce dose. The best I can describe, Limu tastes like a pleasant blend of chlorophyll, grapefruit and tropical fruit flavors and is somewhat tangy. The taste is unusual but easy to get accustomed to.
I took my first dose of Limu following the Procedure for Evaluating the Immediate Effects of Limu (page 7). I proceeded with the Limu Loading Dose (page 13), which suggests taking four ounces a day. By the end of the day, however, I still hadn’t noticed anything different about my well-being. As an experiment, I tried applying a Limu Poultice (page 133) on my arm. This was an intuitive move, as there is nothing wrong with my arm. Yet within minutes the skin under the poultice got warm and reddened. This was quite a surprise—Limu increased circulation! Maybe Limu liquid extract had indeed elevated seaweed from dietary supplement to therapeutic agent.
The next day, I continued the Limu Loading Dose. I looked forward to the evening when my work was done, my kids were in bed, and I could experiment with topical Limu applications. In particular, I wanted to try a Limu Poultice on my right hip, because it had been hurting so badly that driving had become very painful. But by bedtime, my hip no longer hurt. Anxious to try a topical application anyway, I wondered where else I might apply Limu. I placed a Mini-Poultice (page 139) over an itchy viral sore that I’ve had for years. After a few short applications, it was significantly smaller. Today, it is gone.
My hip remained pain free until my first case of Limu ran out. It took about a week to get another, and meanwhile, the hip pain returned. When I resumed my Limu doses, the pain disappeared again. This proved that my recovery was not a fluke, and that Limu really had done something significant. (Months later, as of this writing, the pain has still not returned.) I continued to experiment with Limu on myself, and on many of my dear friends and relatives who so willingly agreed to be my “guinea pigs” and who gave me invaluable feedback. I am very grateful to each one of you.
I have tried using Limu in every way I could imagine and give you my results in this book. I have also combined Limu with other health principles I have learned over the years, such as spiritual exercise techniques, body rhythms, energy flows and keeping the body hydrated. These principles are incorporated in the chapters on the Limu Anti-Stress Procedure (page 67), the Limu Fast Method 3 (page 97), The Limu Auto-Distribution Dose (page 79), The Limu Maintenance Dose 2 (page 25) and the Limu Procedure for Serious Conditions 2 (page 49).
Researching and writing this book has been a joy. It has enabled me to incorporate years of experience working as a layperson with natural healing methods, my intuitive sense of how the body works, my experiences cooking and eating seaweed as well as my personal love and respect for the ocean and its abundant gifts. However, my greatest reward is that now I can share what I know and love about seaweed, because now there is a way for people to obtain its therapeutic benefits easily—by drinking a convenient, tasty, liquid seaweed extract.
A friend told me about Limu. I imagine a friend told you about it too. I hope this book will help you speak with confidence about Limu so that you can pass this gift along to your friends, too.
