Sugmad's Dream
46" x 40"
My
grandmother taught me to crochet when I was a teenager. Many years later,
in 1994, I decided to get back into the hobby and crochet an afgan.
My plans changed when I visited the yarn shop.
Instead of bringing home wool for a blanket, I found a book on freeform
crochet, The Crochet Workbook, by Sylvia Cosh and James Walters.
The techniques and artwork displayed in the book stirred my creative
energies.
Soon afterward I had a vision of an
inner-world landscape and a voice in my heart told me to recreate it with
freeform crochet. The inspiration
captivated me. Over the next few
weeks I gathered the materials I needed. I
added two leaves to the dining room table and took over the entire room with
yarn and canvas. The artwork took me
two years to complete. Sugmad's Dream is my largest artwork to
date.
The name “Sugmad’s Dream” came with the original vision. The
word, “Sugmad” is an ancient name for God.
Here
is a close-up of a portion of the artwork so that you can see its detail.
The metallic thread really shines!
